DAY 14 - DAY 9 CRYSTAL SERENITY - SEA DAY

We were asked about two items that we had eaten at Silk Road the other night by Steve and they were special ordered.

We enjoyed another spectacular evening on the ship last night.

Around the time we were leaving port, the Captain spoke to everyone from the bridge.  He noted that that shortly after we would leave port to expect some rough seas due to high wind.  He recommended that if you are prone to sea sickness that you take whatever precautions you normally do.  Since we knew the forecast called for some rough seas we took Bonine a couple of hours before we left port.  By around 8:00 PM we were definitely swaying.

We stopped by the library on our way to the Crystal Cove.  We gave the Librarian a book for the Library that we picked up in Belfast about the Titanic along with a DVD.  We thought both would be nice additions to the Library.

Before dinner, we sat at the Crystal Cove and enjoyed listening to John Mentis perform.  John is amazing requiring no sheet music for all of the songs he plays which is quite extensive    Often people will request a song and he just plays it by memory.  If only we had John’s memory for music.

We sat with fellow passenger Tommy who we sat with the night before who is one of four ladies who now lives on the ship.

The Crystal Cove was a little quieter than on the most recent nights likely since several guests had returned from full day tours and were either resting or still getting ready for dinner.

We dined last evening with Crew Officer Nina and with IT Manager Steve who are engaged and will be getting married in January of next year.  We first met Nina in 2007 while she worked at the reception desk and over the years we watched her assume greater areas of responsibility including Concierge, Chief Concierge and Crew Officer.  She is a gem.  We met Steve a few years ago and he has responsibility for managing the IT related systems on the ship, including the Computer University.  The are a delightful couple.

We were back in the Crystal Dining Room for dinner and taken excellent care of by the fabulous wait staff team.

We began our meal with salads.  Anne Marie enjoyed a standing order salad of Spinach with a few items served on the side such as  small pieces of egg.  Keith continues to have his salad of Boston Lettuce, fresh mushrooms, tomatoes and cucumbers.  We both eat a large salad for dinner at home and try to go with something simple on board the ship at night.

We decided to each have a soup.  Given the temperature outside it felt like a soup night.  Anne Marie had soup with a Matzo Ball and Keith had the Modern Cuisine soup of Tomato & Basil Esmpuma which is shown in the photo below.  It had two colors and the Tomato portion of the soup was hidden as the Basil had risen to the top of the bowl.

The soup was delicious as it was very tasty, served hot and had a very nice presentation to it.

For our main course, we went with the Modern Cuisine Menu as well and selected the seafood item which was Fresh Icelandic Ocean Perch served with Spinach Puree, Confit Potatoes & Apple Jus.  The other Modern Cuisine entrée was Pork Tender Loin in a Bread Coast, Black Bean Puree, Glazed Apple, Endive, Cashew Nuts & Truffle Foam which Steve ordered.

The modern cuisine entrées are very unique both in terms of presentation, ingredients and taste.  At the same time four other entrees were offered on the Crystal Classic menu and on top of this a Salad Entrée was offered and each night Salmon, Chicken and Steak is also available as well.

We both and the Fresh Icelandic Ocean Perch.  The fish was very moist. It was on the plainer side so would be a nice fit with those who do not care for a fishy type of taste.

For dessert, Anne Marie had the sugar-free Chocolate Cheesecake and Steve had the Peanut Butter Trifle which was all Peanut Butter.
Keith had the mixed berries.

All in all it was an absolutely wonderful dinner.  We enjoyed lots of great conversation and some good laughs too.  We dined for over two hours with Nina and Steve.

After dinner, there was dancing in the Crystal Cove with the Galaxy Orchestra and it was a great way to end the evening.  The Cove was very lively which was nice to see.

By the time we got back to our room we were definitely rocking and rolling and we could hear the wind that the Captain spoke about.  Just to be on the safe side we placed any breakable items that were not in enclosed cabinets on the floor or on a chair and couch.

We slept well as the ship rocked and rolled as if we were in a crib.  LOL.  A few hours after going to sleep the swells seemed to be calmer than when we first returned to the room. By morning we were still rocking but for us it was relatively mild.  Some people who don't care for any movement of the ship would probably say that it was a little rough for them.

Keith woke early and we had our morning routine of Keith working out, going to the Lido Cafe, bringing coffee back to Anne Marie and then Anne Marie taking a one hour walk until it was time to have breakfast in our room.  The ship was relatively quiet with many guests sleeping in.

Today was the first of four consecutive sea days.

There was lots of items on the program and far too numerous to mention.  In fact, there were about 50 different activities scheduled starting at 7:00 AM until 5:15 PM and that does not even include eating.  LOL.  On top of this there was even a 7:00 PM Fitness Evening Stretch Class and then several activities in the evening.

During the first lecture of the morning Ken Walsh spoke about how the President's are like when they let their guard down.  We didn't attend this lecture as we had seen it on a previous cruise.  It is a quite interesting lecture as it provides a lot of behind the scenes information.  As it turns out Keith watched it in the afternoon while working out just to refresh himself on some of the stories he spoke about.  Several are not surprises if you have read about the various President's, but nevertheless interesting.  It is a reminder though that while the size of Air Force 1 today is quite large, the planes that were used by say Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy and then by Johnson and Nixon and Ford were quite smaller in size.  The other item that jumped out at Keith was John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson flying together in Air Force 1 and should the plane have gone down we could have lost both the President and the Vice President.  A reminder when both were in Dallas together on that fateful day when President John F Kennedy was assassinated.  Also it was a reminder of the speed and fuel capacity of today's planes such as the flight that Franklin Roosevelt took to meet with Winston Churchill took 45 hours with several stops versus 8 hours today with no stops.  Also, discussed were some of the physical challenges of President Roosevelt and President Kennedy and some of the challenges when they were flying.

Instead, we sat at the Crystal Cove where we spoke with several fellow guests, members of the crew and several Senior Officers.  Anne Marie also began yet another new knitting project.

Next up was Ambassador Marc Ginsberg who spoke about the Ukraine and answered the question will Nato save the Ukraine?  We attended this lecture and it was also very informative.  Like so many issues this one is a challenging one.  For his last take, Ambassador is going to talks about the Future of Israel, Iran and Syria.  As he said, this one is even more challenging than his two other talks.

When introducing the lectures, Cruise Director noted that the lectures were being shown simultaneously live in all guest staterooms and would be done for the next three sea day recognizing that those guests who might be bothered by the seas might prefer watching the lectures in the comfort of their stateroom.  This was noted also in the daily Reflections Program.

We enjoyed another lunch at the Lido Cafe.  As we do most days, we each made salad entrees for ourselves.  The Lido Cafe was quite crowded.  While we were there the Captain spoke from the bridge and pretty much said the seas would be choppy and that the weather could change at any point.  We decided to be safe and around 2:00 PM we each took one more Bonine.

Keith passed on Paddle Tennis today knowing that it would be cold and windy.

In the afternoon Dr. Bulen Atalay spoke about Leonardo da Venci, Scientist and Engineer.  On top of this since this is a Wine and Food Cruise there was wine tasting which compared California and French White Wines and also a Cooking Class and Golf Pro

Keith got a bit confused on the time of today's Spin Class thinking it was being held in the afternoon, but later learning that is tomorrow's class and the one today was held at 10:00 AM.  With that being the case, in the afternoon Keith worked out on the Elliptical Machine for the second time today and he also signed up for tomorrow afternoon's Spin Class.  When each of the two instructors saw Keith they said they thought that maybe Keith was sick since he didn't come to class and they know how much he loves to Spin.

At the same time, Anne Marie walked for another hour in the afternoon.  We also both walked around the ship today, including walking into each of the on-board stores.

Tonight we will be attending the Ultimate Vintage Room and also the Crystal Society Party.
